EASTER

GOOD FRIDAY MARCH OF WITNESS REPORT

The March of Witness went ahead despite the torrential downpour throughout the march. The wet conditions failed to dampen the spirits of those taking part.

Later, Reverend Simon Franklin commented that the it has been a ‘powerful witness’.

The March left the Health Centre after an enactment of the arrest of Jesus. After processing to the Mowlem Theatre Jesus was tried. Even the sea played its part as large waves cascaded over the sea wall.

The final part, The Crucifixion, was held at the Quay.

There is very little mention, in ther New Testament, of Jesus’ carrying out his Ministry in adverse weather conditions; the only incident that comes to mind is the storm on Lake Galilee.

One thing is certain, Jesus would not have delayed his Ministry because of the rain.

TENEBRAE SERVICE AND COMMUNION FOR MAUNDY THURSDAY

Members of the URC joined Christians from many other denominations in the town at the

Methodist

Church for this very special Service.

This form of service is taken from an early Christian service called Tenebrae. The name comes from the Latin, meaning ‘darkness’ or ’shadows’.

One of the main features of the service is the gradual extinguishing of the candles until only a single candle remains. As it gets darker we can reflect on the great emotional and physical pain experienced by Jesus in the hours before and during, the crucifixion. The steadily reducing light also marks the apparent triumph of evil over goodness, both at that time and in our own time.

Finally the Christ candle is the only illumination left, and when it is extinguished the sanctuary is in complete darkness. On the relighting of the Christ candle – a sign of the miracle to follow on Easter morning – the congregation leaves in silence.

The Maundy Thursday service starts the Easter period in sombre mood which continues with the arrest, trial and Crucifixion on Good Friday.
